Part 1: I plan to incorporate visual, audio and spatial modes of communication into my paper. I will include pictures of things I find beautiful into my text for examples of the visual mode of communication. By giving examples of what I think is beautiful, I can compare/contrast my views to the views of Schiller and today’s society. I’m also thinking about including some song clips I find beautiful to include a second mode of communication (audio). My third mode of communication, spatial, will be how my text and pictures/audio clips will be laid out to maximize the effectiveness of my paper.

Part 2: Here is a rough outline of the topics I’m planning to talk about in my paper.

-how we should learn to appreciate the small things in life that are beautiful. I will mention Hannah Little’s presentation and how I agree with those ideas of beauty, as well as slowing down and realizing how much beauty and adventure nature has to offer. I will also incorporate some of my own pictures of other little things in life I find beautiful.

-how everyone has unique ideas of what they think are beautiful–“beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder” (Armstrong 1). I will use my own pictures/pictures I’ve found on the internet, as well as discussing how Anthony’s views on the beauty of cathedrals are similar/different from mine. I might include song clips here to show diversity in music and how different types of music appeal to different people (maybe talk about Stephen and Aaron’s presentation here as well).

-discussing Schiller’s ideas of the sense drive and the form drive. I will include the painting of Madame Devaucay that Armstrong put in his essay to talk about how Schiller wanted to balance the two drives. I will talk about how beauty has made an impact on my life.

-I will also talk about what today’s society views as beautiful and what I think about those views. When I google “what does our society think is beautiful”, every page that comes up has to do with the physical beauty of people, almost exclusively women. I will discuss how that is affecting women and young girls in today’s society. I will include quotes from articles like https://www.theodysseyonline.com/societys-definition-beauty-dangerous and https://www.huffingtonpost.com/temimah-zucker/aging-and-beauty-_b_5134228.html.

  1. Emme,
I really like the way you outline your paper and how it seems like you put a lot of thought into what you wanted to include in your work. I also like how there are several different aspects of beauty that you plan on focusing on rather than harping on one particular thing. Reading your outline also helped me to think of different thing to incorporate into my own paper since I hadn’t really been able to get my thoughts together on what I wanted to write about. Overall I feel like you have a good handle on what you want to say and the evidence you plan on using to support your claims. My only advise really is to maybe try not and over clutter you paragraphs with ideas and evidence and make sure that you let each claim be its own identity with its own supporting evidence. Good luck with your writing process and I’m excited to see how this paper turns out for you!!

  2. Your outline is very strong and straightforward. It sounds like it will have excellent organization and structure. You really want to tackle a lot of topics and ideas here, so my only advice would be to not be bogged down by too many different sources, but I’m sure you’ll be able to handle it based on your clear organization.
