I learned a lot about writing from this class and I found this sheet to be very helpful. One of the most important writing techniques I learned in this class was how to write a good outline; in high school, I just wrote whatever came to mind, which meant my papers were disorganized and a little chaotic. However, in ENG 110 I learned the importance of organizing my thoughts before I start to draft a paper, which I think has…

One of my main goals for this paper is to make sure my claims and transitions tie back into my thesis. To do this, I am going to highlight the claim sentences and main points in every paragraph to make sure I have enough strong support for my thesis. I will also use the trash bin technique to make sure the evidence I use really supports my thesis. I also really need to make sure my MLA format is correct….

Part 1: I plan to incorporate visual, audio and spatial modes of communication into my paper. I will include pictures of things I find beautiful into my text for examples of the visual mode of communication. By giving examples of what I think is beautiful, I can compare/contrast my views to the views of Schiller and today’s society. I’m also thinking about including some song clips I find beautiful to include a second mode of communication (audio). My third mode…

I think Armstrong’s quote “To regard beauty as a luxury adornment or a social signifier was to miss the true potential of the experience” is very meaningful and accurate. If you only view something as beautiful because it’s expensive or because you think it will improve your social status, you’re completely missing the point of beauty. There are countless beautiful things that don’t require lots of money and that don’t affect social status in any way. For example, I could…

One presentation I really enjoyed from yesterday’s class was Hannah Little’s (hlittle1.uneportfolio.org). She showed us pictures of paintings in the Portland Museum of Art that reminded her of hikes she has been on and mountains she’s climbed. I also liked how Hannah shared pictures of hikes she has completed. I connected to this presentation because I absolutely love hiking and anything outdoors, so Hannah’s pictures and emphasis on the little things really resonated with me. As I was getting ready…

For this exercise, I highlighted claims, transitions, and key terms from my second paper. I highlighted my claims in green, my key terms in blue, and transitions in gray. I also highlighted every time I wrote the phrases  “I believe” and “I think”; this exercise showed me how repetitive my writing is and how I can work to improve diction, transitions and strong claims. While doing this exercise, I noticed many things I can improve on my paper. When I…

Jonah Lehrer’s work “The Future of Science is…Art?” is a very interesting piece of writing that argues how art should be incorporated into science and vice versa. Lehrer discussed how art can improve science and help it progress to a higher understanding of our universe and ourselves. He uses the unanswered questions in the fields of physics and neuroscience to support his argument that incorporating art into science will be beneficial. I thought this was an interesting article and that…

The immediate context includes the title, “Necessary Edges: Art, Empathy and Education”, which was written by the cellist Yo-Yo Ma. It was published in January 2014 in the World Post. Before Yo-Yo Ma begins his work, there is a short biography about him and the World Post. I noticed that the bio included some of Yo-Yo Ma’s extensive accomplishments and awards, which gave the audience an idea of whose work we wold be reading. It also mentioned his degrees from…

PART 1 Quote 1: “At the beginning of the piece, he wrote, “this is often what EA comes down to: working hard to earn money and then giving as much of it as you can to the needy”.” I believe I could analyze this quote more effectively. Using one of They Say/I Say’s templates for explaining quotes, I could say something along the lines of “In other words, Effective Altruism is centered around money and donating to charity.” and then…

BEFORE: In Rhys Southan’s “Is Art a Waste of Time?”, EA was introduced and it was clear from the start that EA members do view art as a waste of time. Southan explained EA’s shallow pond analogy, which stated “Suppose you saw a child drowning in a pond: would you jump in and rescue her, even if you hadn’t pushed her in? Even if it meant ruining your clothes?…Any break we take from working to reduce suffering throughout the world is…
